With a background in cultural anthropology, film and the visual arts, Frank Helmer’s work as a costume designer is heavily informed by the power media has in creating culture. Whether it’s female drug lords in Queen of the South, the never ending rivalry between the original leads of Karate Kid in Cobra Kai, or a battle for power between Amish kingpins and neo-nazi skinheads in Banshee, the roll of costume in creating, enhancing and amplifying character is the driving force in his work in film and television.
When not working as a costume designer, he writes and directs films of his own. His most recent short screened at more than 17 national and international film festivals.
